March 7, 2019: Azaad Health, a Karachi based startup, has been selected as one of the finalists for the GIST Tech-I Competition 2019. The 24 finalists representing 18 countries were announced by the U.S. Department of State on March 7, after a month long campaign by semifinalists, collectively reaching over 1.7 million people worldwide.
Before flying to Bahrain to participate in the 2019 Global Entrepreneurship Congress for a live pitch before a panel of expert judges, the Tech-I finalists will undergo online training to better prepare for the competition.
“We believe that being one of the finalists for GIST is a testament that the healthcare industry is finally open for a major horizontal disruption. Healthcare and blockchain are undoubtedly two of the most difficult industries to work in therefore getting the opportunity to present my idea in front of global decision makers is a tremendous honor” said Syed Abrar, Founder AzaadHealth.
AzaadHealth is a global patient-owned health data exchange network built upon blockchain which aims to empower patients by democratizing health records, by pulling and combining health data from multiple disparate sources like healthcare providers, personal wellness devices and other sources. The idea is nothing short of a blessing for many families with loved ones suffering from a terminal or chronic illness. The startup was founded in August 2016 after Abrar went through a personal loss due to mismanaged medical records. Abrar applied for incubation at The Nest I/O and was selected as one of the startups in the fourth cohort where he received training and mentorship to turn his idea into a practical business.
The GIST finalists will receive intensive entrepreneurial skills training, mentorship, and the opportunity to network with global leaders in their field during the 2-day GEC 2019 event. “We hope to gain international recognition, exposure, and clients. We want to show the developing economies of the world that we are here and we are working for them. We want governments (including Pakistan) and healthcare organizations to know that we already have a cutting-edge digital health infrastructure available which they can deploy for their countries/organizations and revolutionize healthcare in the region” commented Abrar.
“When AzaadHealth was incubated at The Nest I/O in August 2016, it was one of the very few startups in the healthcare industry making use of blockchain to solve a problem that affects thousands of people everyday. We are so proud to see AzaadHealth get recognized on an international platform after all the hard work that Abrar and his team have put in. The competition will be tough but we have complete confidence that Azaad Health will be one of the top contenders ” said Jehan Ara, President P@SHA and The Nest I/O.
GIST will announce capital seed prizes for the winners of the GIST-I Competition, to be decided by a panel of expert judges after a live pitching.
